First off, I am glad to inform that members from the Barcelona Football Club Foundation, one of our partners, will be present that day as well which is excellent because you will get a chance to speak to them too. So,  I’d like to propose the following schedule for your visit:

  • 8:00 am: Meet at your hotel and leave by 8:30 to leave time for breakfast
  • 9:00 am: Arrive at Vila Olimpica Complexo Alemao
  • 9:00 – 10:00 am: Tour of the facilities. Students will get a chance to see great daily activities taking place, specifically judo classes, football training, swimming class, rhythmic gymnastics class, singing class, and taekwondo
  • 10:00 – 12:00 pm: Meetings, conversations, and insight sharing. Here you will get a chance to talk to three stakeholders: 1) Me and Gabi as the project leaders and consultants for the IDB 2) Representatives from Barcelona Football Club and 3) The managers of the Vila Olimpica, who work for the NGO that manages the vila. I think talking to us three will give your students a great and varied perspective on the different challenges that arise upon trying to implement, manage, and scale NGO related activities and projects in comunidades.
  • 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm: Lunch and Teleferico tour of the comunidade. So we will have lunch close to the Vila Olimpica at a pesujo so they get the “real deal” and then we will have enough time to take the bus to where the teleferico starts, and to an entire loop of the comunidades back and forth (this will cost around 5 reals per person). This will be a great experience.
  • 2:00: Depart for Vila Olimpica in Caju
  • 2:30 – 3:00: Tour of the facilities in Caju
  • 3:00 – 4:00: Meeting with key staff in Caju. So here we would meet with the people who manage the Vila Olimpica in Caju. This will be a great opportunity for students to compare and contrast management styles and realities faced in two different comunidades.
  • 4:00: Depart to hotel.

Now, in order to facilitate the conversations your team will be having with us and the others, I am attaching three documents that you can share with your team. Unfortunately, two of them are in portuguese so maybe you can make a summary of the main points and share those with them… In any case, the first document is the overview of our project so you are more familiar with the activities and scope. The other two documents are the result of an analysis that was conducted of the Vila Olimpica in Complexo Aleman.

This diagnostic analysis is the basis for our project because it was a full needs assessment and analysis of all challenges faced by the Vila Olimpica. As a result of that analysis, our project was formed to basically try to solve those issues. I am sharing these documents with you because I think it will help you and your team prepare questions for us, for the barcelona crew, and for the managers of the Vila Olimpica – questions that you think hearing the answer to will be rewarding for you based on your team’s interests. The idea is for these questions to guide the conversations we will have with the stakeholders.
