Cape Town, Day 6

March 21, 2017

Tuesday, March 14

Our last official day of the program, which began with a visit with Gareth Duncan of GD Industries.  What did you learn from his presentation and what did it provide for you?  We then finished the program with our closing dinner at Sevruga. What were your take-aways from today?  And are there any final observations as well?

And a brief word of thanks to all of you for participating in this year’s Global South Africa. Cape Town is an impressive city, with a mix of development vs. underdevelopment, and an unique challenge to grow amid low GDP, high unemployment, and historical racial issues.  I appreciated the opportunity to experience South Africa with all of you and enjoyed the learning curve along the way.  Orlando

Cape Town, Day 5

March 21, 2017

Monday, March 13

Today we headed out to Heart Capital and the Kayamandi Township in Stellenbosch. Mandy Shrimpton and Loyiso Mbete hosted us, including a description of their projects and a tour of Kayamandi.  What were you impressions of their various projects: Vegetable Gardens, Home Building, Spekboom Trees?  What take-aways did you gain from Heart Capital’s approach to social franchise models?

Back to Cape Town, Day 4

March 21, 2017

Sunday, March 12

With our change in schedule, today we headed back to Cape Town, and even arrived early enough to give you time to schedule a full day of activities.  How did you fill your time today and when did you learn about South Africa along the way?

Gordon’s Bay, Day 1

March 11, 2017

Saturday, March 11

Of course the day was yours to plan as you chose, and everyone scatters to their various activities.  What did you do this day and what did you learn from the experience?

Doringbaai & Lutzville, Day 2

March 11, 2017

Friday, March 10

Unfortunately our Doringbaai and Lutzville experience didn’t come off as we had hoped. Yet, many had interview visits and new interactions with local residents and host families. In every situation we have opportunities to learn and insights to gain.  What were yours today?

Doringbaai & Lutzville, Day 1

March 11, 2017

Thursday, March 9

Today we drove up to Doringbaai and Lutzville, where we met our home stay families, conducted our initial interaction activities, and got to know some of the local residents (including lots and lots of children). Clearly not the smoothest day ever, but in terms of learning more about South Africa, what did you learn today and what did you most benefit from as related to the opportunity to interact?

Who are you and why are you here?

Cape Town, Day 3

March 11, 2017

Wednesday, March 8

Delheim Winery, and a gigantic appreciation for all that goes into preserving a family business in South Africa. Gracious hosts, excellent food, awesome scenery, what more could one hope from the Delheim visit! From there we added a second visit to Coca Cola, including a tour of the bottle production facility. How about today? What did you learn about South Africa, business in South Africa, Delheim or Coca Cola? What insights did you gain for yourself?

What a view! I mean, what a view!

Cape Town, Day 2

March 11, 2017

Tuesday, March 7

Today François led us in our rugby training, including throwing, catching, running, positions, scrums, throw ins, and everything else to make it look like we knew what we were doing.  After our rugby lesson we ate lunch at the Stellenbosch Rugby Academy. From there we did sight-seeing at Boulder’s Beach and both Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. What were your favorite parts about today’s activities and what were your takeaways, as related to new insights you gained about South Africa?

Nick knows you gotta pass behind you.

Cape Town, Day 1

March 11, 2017

Monday, March 6

Springbok and SA Rugby, seems like a pretty good way to start our South Africa visits. Andy and Hans were gracious hosts, and we got our first exposure how rugby and race have been connected forever.  We ended the day at the opening reception at the Butcher Shop, where we also met Gabriel and Darius.  What are your takeaways from your experience today?

Cape Town, First Impressions

March 6, 2017

Sunday, March 5

Everyone has arrived (well except Garry, John and Eugene, but that is a different story). You will never again have “first impressions” of Cape Town and South Africa. Some come early, others arrive late. Some get oriented quickly, others feel a bit lost.  Welcome to our global connections trip for 2017.  Please add a post with your first impressions.  What are the things that jumped out at you right away, knowing that you were in a new country and a new culture?  What let you know that you were in South Africa?
